La Plata-Dolphin in Argentinia
The La Plata-Dolphin is found off the Atlantic coast of South America, and is one of the least known and least studied dolphin species. Every year, high numbers of these dolphins are by-caught in fishing gear or washed ashore dead, and the population is believed to suffer a rapid decline. yaqu pacha supports the studies of Argentinean and Brasilian biologists who will pinpoint the extent of damage to this species caused by drift nets, and are gathering data to evaluate the status of the La Plata-Dolphin. Moreover, yaqu pacha works on the developement of improved fishing gear with acoustical warning signals (Pingers) which will help to keep the dolphins away from the nets. |
